Mesons with Beauty and Charm: Spectroscopy
Applying knowledge of the interaction between heavy quarks derived from the
study of and bound states, we calculate the
spectrum of mesons. We compute transition rates for the
electromagnetic and hadronic cascades that lead from excited states to the
ground state, and briefly consider the prospects for

Recommendations for exercise adherence measures in musculoskeletal settings : a systematic review and consensus meeting (protocol)
Background: Exercise programmes are frequently advocated for the management of musculoskeletal disorders; however, adherence is an important pre-requisite for their success. The assessment of exercise adherence requires the use of relevant and appropriate measures, but guidance for appropriate assessment does not exist. This research will identify and evaluate the quality and acceptability of all measures used to assess exercise adherence within a musculoskeletal setting, seeking to reach consensus for the most relevant and appropriate measures for application in research and/or clinical practice settings.
Methods/design: There are two key stages to the proposed research. First, a systematic review of the quality and acceptability of measures used to assess exercise adherence in musculoskeletal disorders; second, a consensus meeting. The systematic review will be conducted in two phases and reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines to ensure a robust methodology. Phase one will identify all measures that have been used to assess exercise adherence in a musculoskeletal setting. Phase two will seek to identify published and unpublished evidence of the measurement and practical properties of identified measures. Study quality will be assessed against the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) guidelines. A shortlist of best quality measures will be produced for consideration during stage two: a meeting of relevant stakeholders in the United Kingdom during which consensus on the most relevant and appropriate measures of exercise adherence for application in research and/or clinical practice settings will be sought.
Discussion: This study will benefit clinicians who seek to evaluate patients’ levels of exercise adherence and those intending to undertake research, service evaluation, or audit relating to exercise adherence in the musculoskeletal field. The findings will impact upon new research studies which aim to understand the factors that predict adherence with exercise and which test different adherence-enhancing interventions. Scaling violations: Connections between elastic and inelastic hadron scattering in a geometrical approach
Starting from a short range expansion of the inelastic overlap function,
capable of describing quite well the elastic pp and scattering data,
we obtain extensions to the inelastic channel, through unitarity and an impact
parameter approach. Based on geometrical arguments we infer some
characteristics of the elementary hadronic process and this allows an excellent
description of the inclusive multiplicity distributions in and
collisions. With this approach we quantitatively correlate the violations of
both geometrical and KNO scaling in an analytical way. The physical picture
from both channels is that the geometrical evolution of the hadronic
constituents is principally reponsible for the energy dependence of the
physical quantities rather than the dynamical (elementary) interaction itself.Comment: 16 pages, aps-revtex, 11 figure
Who Cares About Being Gentle? The Impact of Social Identity and the Gender of One’s Friends on Children’s Display of Same-Gender Favoritism
This research assessed children’s same-gender favoritism by examining whether children value traits descriptive of their own gender more than traits descriptive of the other gender. We also investigated whether children’s proportion of same-gender friends relates to their same-gender favoritism. Eighty-one third and fourth grade children from the Midwest and West Coast of the U.S. rated how well 19 personality traits describe boys and girls, and how important each trait is for their gender to possess. Results replicate and extend past trait assignment research by demonstrating that both genders valued same-gender traits significantly more than other-gender traits. Results also indicated that boys with many same-gender friends derogated feminine-stereotyped traits, which has implications for research on masculinity norms within male-dominated peer groups
Brain size and brain/intracranial volume ratio in major mental illness
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This paper summarizes the findings of a long term study addressing the question of how several brain volume measure are related to three major mental illnesses in a Colorado subject group. It reports results obtained from a large N, collected and analyzed by the same laboratory over a multiyear period, with visually guided MRI segmentation being the primary initial analytic tool.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Intracerebral volume (ICV), total brain volume (TBV), ventricular volume (VV), ventricular/brain ratio (VBR), and TBV/ICV ratios were calculated from a total of 224 subject MRIs collected over a period of 13 years. Subject groups included controls (C, N = 89), and patients with schizophrenia (SZ, N = 58), bipolar disorder (BD, N = 51), and schizoaffective disorder (SAD, N = 26).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>ICV, TBV, and VV measures compared favorably with values obtained by other research groups, but in this study did not differ significantly between groups. TBV/ICV ratios were significantly decreased, and VBR increased, in the SZ and BD groups compared to the C group. The SAD group did not differ from C on any measure.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In this study TBV/ICV and VBR ratios separated SZ and BD patients from controls. Of interest however, SAD patients did not differ from controls on these measures. The findings suggest that the gross measure of TBV may not reliably differ in the major mental illnesses to a degree useful in diagnosis, likely due to the intrinsic variability of the measures in question; the differences in VBR appear more robust across studies. Differences in some of these findings compared to earlier reports from several laboratories finding significant differences between groups in VV and TBV may relate to phenomenological drift, differences in analytic techniques, and possibly the "file drawer problem".</p
Dark Matter, Light Stops and Electroweak Baryogenesis
We examine the neutralino relic density in the presence of a light top
squark, such as the one required for the realization of the electroweak
baryogenesis mechanism, within the minimal supersymmetric standard model. We
show that there are three clearly distinguishable regions of parameter space,
where the relic density is consistent with WMAP and other cosmological data.
These regions are characterized by annihilation cross sections mediated by
either light Higgs bosons, Z bosons, or by the co-annihilation with the
lightest stop. Tevatron collider experiments can test the presence of the light
stop in most of the parameter space. In the co-annihilation region, however,
the mass difference between the light stop and the lightest neutralino varies
between 15 and 30 GeV, presenting an interesting challenge for stop searches at
hadron colliders. We present the prospects for direct detection of dark matter,
which provides a complementary way of testing this scenario. We also derive the
required structure of the high energy soft supersymmetry breaking mass
parameters where the neutralino is a dark matter candidate and the stop
spectrum is consistent with electroweak baryogenesis and the present bounds on

Search for a Fourth Generation Charge -1/3 Quark via Flavor Changing Neutral Current Decay
We report on a search for pair production of a fourth generation charge -1/3
quark (b') in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron
using an integrated luminosity of 93 pb^-1. Both quarks are assumed to decay
via flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC). The search uses the signatures
gamma + 3 jets + mu-tag and 2 gamma + 2 jets. We see no significant excess of
events over the expected background. We place an upper limit on the production
cross section times branching fraction that is well below theoretical
expectations for a b' quark decaying exclusively via FCNC for b' quark masses
